My project is a layered mixed media piece. I was thinking about how the artist, teacher, and researcher identities are all happening at the same time, but are not always in balance. I feel that when I am focused on one, another is lacking. I wanting to emphasize this changing dominance by creating a layered piece where the layers could be moved and rotated depending on which mode is dominant. I began with the image of the "Vitruvian Man" by DaVinci, thinking about the one body with many limbs. I started by making the layer for each identity out of tracing paper, but they weren't as transparent as I would have liked, so I changed gears and switched to Mylar. As I was drawing the bodies, I realized I wanted more emphasis on the face, so I added the circle with the portrait in the background. I was also inspired by paintings I saw this week at a local show, so I decided to make the background layer out of painted chipboard. I drilled holes and added the grommets so that they can be removed and the order of the layers can be altered. Angie's clay piece from last project gave me the idea to use the metal prongs in the corners.
