Title: AEI Conference Archive
|
Reflection: The Art Educators of Iowa conference is a yearly professional development opportunity for art teachers by art teachers. I have participated in five of the Fall Conferences, and each time, I have brought something new back to improve my teaching. The conference two years ago in Cedar Rapids was what inspired me to start using standards based grading in my classroom.

Standard 7B: Works collaboratively to improve professional practice and student learning.
Title: AEI Board Contact List
|
Reflection: One of the things that I do to improve my own practice and the profession as a whole is serving on the board of Art Educators of Iowa. I have served in various roles on the All-State committee since 2010, and have been the board secretary since 2013. The AEI board works to advocate, and provide programming and professional development for art teachers across the state. Our big focus right now is to get the Visual Arts in the Iowa Core documents passed by the Iowa Legislature.

Standard 7C: Applies research, knowledge, and skills from professional development opportunities to improve practice.
Title: Google Classroom Homepage
|
Reflection: Last fall I went to an Appy Hour session hosted by Lori Ehrhardt. She showed us how to use Google Classroom as an instructional tool. This semester, I have had all of my classes connected to Google Classroom. It has really streamlined turning in assignments as well as put the responsibility of keeping track of due dates and missing assignments on students. Each time students have a new project or task to complete, I post a link to the the directions on my website and the students complete the work and upload it using Google Classroom. Sometimes I explicitly walk students through the instructions. Other times, I direct them to the instructions on the site and only step in if I see from their work that they are not understanding.

Standard 7D: Establishes and implements professional development plans based upon the teacher’s needs aligned to the Iowa teaching standards and district/building student achievement goals.
Title: Critique Statement Sheet
|
Reflection: For my professional development plan my first year of teaching, I focused on visual literacy since the district was focused on improving English and Reading scores on the MAP and Iowa Assessment tests. One of our required standards is for students to respond to artwork. I thought observing student growth in analyzing artwork would be a great focus for both. I created this assessment method based on one used by a teacher I met through Art Educators of Iowa. Most of the students that showed growth on these statements showed growth on their standardized test scores. Most students started only able to get a 1or a 2 on this assessment and by the end I had no 1's, a few 2's and the vast majority 3's and 4's.

Standard 7E: Provides an analysis of student learning and growth based on teacher created tests and authentic measures as well as any standardized and district-wide tests
